He signed with CBS in 1989, and in 1990 his Extranjero album had a song that peaked at number 1 on the Latin charts in the United States and won the MTV Video Music Award. His 2004 album, Stop, reached the Top 10 in Latin America and the Latin charts in the United States. In the United States alone, he has recorded over two dozen hits on the Billboard charts.
