Heinrich Luitpold Himmler was Schutzstaffel's Führer and a leading member of the Nazi Party. Himmler was one of the most powerful Nazis and the chief architect of the Holocaust. As a member of a reserve battalion during World War I, Himmler was not served in active service. He studied agronomy at university and joined the Nazi Party in 1923 and SS in 1925. In 1929, he was appointed Reichsführer-SS by Adolf Hitler. Over the next 16 years, he developed the SS from a battalion of only 290 powerful men into a paramilitary group of one million men, while simultaneously establishing and controlling Nazi concentration camps. He was known for his good organizational skills and for selecting highly qualified subordinates, such as Reinhard Heydrich in 1931. From 1943 he was both German Sheriff and Minister of the Interior, overseeing all internal and external security and police forces, including the Gestapo.
