James Fenimore Cooper is an American writer from the first half of the 19th century. His historical novels depicting Native American borders and 17th to 19th century life create a unique form of American literature. He spent most of his childhood and the last fifteen years of his life in Cooperstown, New York, where he was founded by his father William Cooper on the property he owned. Cooper joined the Episcopal Church shortly before his death and contributed generously to it. He attended Yale University for three years, where he was a member of the Linonian Association. After a stint on a commercial trip, Cooper served in the United States Navy as a lieutenant, where he learned sailing technology which greatly influenced many novels and works. The novel that launched his career was The Spy, a spy story set during the American Revolutionary War and published in 1821. He also created stories about the American seas.
